Maternity photoshoot ideas
Updated October 17, 2026
Maternity sessions work best between 32 and 36 weeks. Keep clients comfortable, take breaks, and make the bump the center of the frame.

Idea 1
Side profile with hands on bump
Have her stand in profile, with both hands under the bump or one on top and one below. Shoot from the side with the light coming from a window or open shade. It shows the shape clearly and works for almost any dress.
-
Idea 2
Partner behind with hands on bump
Place the partner behind her with their hands over hers on the bump. Ask them to lean their cheek on her head. It keeps focus on the connection and gives the partner something to do with their hands.
-
Idea 3
Sitting on a chair or bench
Seat her on a stool, bench, or chair with a straight back. Tilt her shoulders slightly toward the camera and keep her feet planted. Sitting is comfortable late in pregnancy and gives you a different angle.
-
Idea 4
Window light at home
Set her next to a large window, wearing a robe, a fitted tee, or a simple gown. Shoot from the side so the light wraps around the bump. Home sessions are a good fit when the weather is bad or energy is low.
-
Idea 5
Flowy dress in the field
Use a long dress with a train or loose fabric that catches wind. Have her walk away, turn, and look back. Check weather ahead of time and keep a chair nearby for rest breaks.
-
Idea 6
Siblings and pets
Include older kids or a family dog in a short set. Have siblings kiss or listen to the bump. Keep this part quick so you can finish with just the parents while everyone is still happy.
-
Idea 7
Ultrasound and baby items
Photograph the ultrasound print, tiny shoes, or a baby blanket resting on the bump. Details tie the gallery to the story and make a good announcement image. Shoot them last when everyone is relaxed.
-
Idea 8
Close-up of the bump
Frame the bump tightly, with hands and fabric. Keep the face out of the frame for this set. Use side light to show shape and texture, and ask her to breathe in and relax her shoulders.
-
Idea 9
Walk together at golden hour
Have the couple walk hand in hand along a path, with the light low and behind them. Stop every few steps for a hug. Keep walks short and offer water between sets.
-
Idea 10
Bare-belly portrait, only if she wants
Offer a covered or partly bare option and let her choose. Use a robe, fabric drape, or crop top. Let her decide on the spot, and never push. Respecting her choice builds trust and a better set.
Prompts to say out loud
- Rest your hands low on the bump and look down at it.
- Take a deep breath in and let your shoulders drop as you breathe out.
- Partner, hug her from behind and rest your chin on her shoulder.
- Tell me the name you have been thinking about, or the one you ruled out.
- Turn your hips a little toward me and chin slightly down.
- Stand tall, roll your shoulders back, and look over your shoulder at me.
What to bring
- A stool or chair with a straight back
- A long gown or fabric for the field set
