Newborn photoshoot ideas

Updated October 17, 2026

Newborn sessions run on the baby's schedule, and safety comes first. Keep every pose simple and keep the baby supported at all times.

  1. Wrapped and sleeping

    Idea 1

    Wrapped and sleeping

Swaddle the baby in a soft wrap and lay them on their back on a padded, flat surface. Keep the room warm and use a white noise machine. This is the easiest pose to hold and the one parents ask for most.

  2. Tummy time on a blanket

    Idea 2

    Tummy time on a blanket

Place the baby on a posing beanbag or other low, padded surface with a blanket on top. Keep a hand next to the baby at all times and never walk away. Shoot from the side at the baby's eye level.

  3. In the parent's arms

    Idea 3

    In the parent's arms

Have a parent hold the baby against their chest or in the crook of one arm. Shoot from above and from the side. Parents relax when they can hold the baby, and the baby sleeps better with skin contact.

  4. Hands, feet, and details

    Idea 4

    Hands, feet, and details

Photograph tiny toes, fingers, lips, and hair. Use a macro lens or get close with a longer lens. Details are easy to shoot when the baby is asleep and are often the favorites for print.

  5. Sibling introduction

    Idea 5

    Sibling introduction

Seat an older sibling on a couch and place the baby in their lap with a parent right next to them, hands ready. Keep it short. Ask the sibling to give a kiss on the head and then let them go.

  1. Parent and baby close-up

    Idea 6

    Parent and baby close-up

Frame a tight shot of a parent's face against the baby's. Try black and white for skin tones and expression. Ask the parent to breathe slowly and look at the baby, not the camera.

  2. In a basket or bowl, with support

    Idea 7

In a basket or bowl, with support

If you use a prop like a basket, line it with a firm base, keep it on the floor, and have a spotter with hands near the baby the entire time. Shoot quickly and take the baby out when done.

  3. Lifestyle at home

    Idea 8

    Lifestyle at home

Photograph the family in the nursery or on the bed, with the baby sleeping or feeding. Use natural window light. Home sessions keep the baby in a familiar place and cut down travel stress.

  4. Family wrap

    Idea 9

    Family wrap

Place the baby in the center of a loose family hug with both parents and siblings. Parents keep their hands under the baby. Shoot from slightly above so faces and hands show.

  5. Awake and alert

    Idea 10

    Awake and alert

Newborns are often calm and wide-eyed after a feeding. Capture a few frames of open eyes, a yawn, or a stretch. These moments are brief, so keep your camera ready and your settings dialed in before the baby wakes.

Prompts to say out loud

  • Keep one hand under the baby the whole time, even while you pose.
  • Take your time, we have all morning and the baby sets the pace.
  • Dad, hold the baby against your chest and look down at them.
  • Mom, rest your cheek on the baby's head and close your eyes.
  • Big sister, give your brother a gentle kiss on the forehead.
  • Let's pause for a feeding and come back in twenty minutes.

What to bring

  • A small space heater to keep the room warm
  • White noise machine or phone app
  • Soft wraps, swaddles, and a flat beanbag
  • Wipes, burp cloths, and spare diapers
  • An assistant to spot any propped pose
