Chapter 5 · Card payments

Connect Stripe or PayPal

About 15 minutes

Connect Stripe or PayPal and your clients can pay deposits and invoices by card, straight into your own account. Pick the tab for the one you use; you start and finish in Mankai, and the middle part happens on their website.

Have this ready

  • A Stripe account, or a PayPal Business account, that you can sign in to.
  • Mankai in one browser tab and Stripe or PayPal in another, so you can copy from one and paste into the other.

Step by step

Get there

  1. Press the gear icon at the top right.

  2. Press Integrations.

Which one do you use?

Stripe

Stripe gives you three things to copy into Mankai: a publishable key, a secret key and a webhook signing secret. Stripe explains them in its guides to API keys and webhooks.

In Mankai: copy the webhook address

A webhook is how Stripe tells Mankai that a client has paid.

  1. Press Set up on the Stripe card. A panel opens on the right.

  2. Scroll down to Webhook address and press Copy.

In Stripe: add the webhook

These steps happen on the Stripe website, in your own account.

  1. Open the Webhooks page in Stripe and press Create an event destination.

  2. Choose Your account, then choose Snapshot as the payload format.

Mankai reads Stripe's Snapshot events, so do not choose Thin.

  3. Select the nine events listed in the note, then press Continue.

    They cover payments, refunds and disputes: checkout.session.completed, checkout.session.async_payment_succeeded, checkout.session.async_payment_failed, checkout.session.expired, refund.created, refund.updated, refund.failed, charge.dispute.created and charge.dispute.closed.

  4. Choose Webhook endpoint and press Continue. Paste the address from Mankai into Endpoint URL and create the destination.

Copy your keys into Mankai

Now switch between the two tabs: copy in Stripe, paste in Mankai.

  1. In Stripe, open the API keys page and copy the Publishable key. Paste it into Publishable key in Mankai.

A key starting pk_test_ is a Stripe sandbox, where no real money moves. pk_live_ is for real payments.

  2. In Stripe, reveal and copy the Secret key. Paste it into Secret key in Mankai.

Stripe may show a live secret key only once, so paste it before you leave the page.

  3. Under Mode, choose Test if your keys start with pk_test_ and sk_test_, or Live if they start with pk_live_ and sk_live_.

The mode and the keys must match, or Stripe will refuse them.

  4. In Stripe, reveal the webhook's Signing secret and copy it. Paste it into Signing secret in Mankai, then press Save.

A Stripe sandbox and your live account each have their own webhook and their own signing secret.

  5. Press Test connection. A message that starts with Connected means Stripe accepted your keys.

  6. Close the panel, choose Use for payments on the Stripe card, then press Save settings at the top right.

You're done when

The Stripe card says Connected and In use. Once you have an invoice, you can try it with Stripe's test card, 4242 4242 4242 4242, any future date and any three digits. Then see How you know a payment arrived.

PayPal

PayPal gives you a client ID and a secret for an app you make in its developer area, plus a webhook ID. PayPal explains them in its guides to REST API credentials, webhooks and the sandbox.

In Mankai: copy the webhook address

A webhook is how PayPal tells Mankai that a client has paid.

  1. Press Set up on the PayPal card. A panel opens on the right.

PayPal says In use from the start, but it has nothing to charge with until you finish these steps.

  2. Scroll down to Webhook address and press Copy.

The box shows only the start of a long address, so press Copy instead of typing it.

In PayPal: make an app and add the webhook

These steps happen on the PayPal website, in your own account.

  1. Sign in to the PayPal Developer Dashboard and press Apps & Credentials.

Sign in with the PayPal Business account that should receive the money.

  2. At the top of the page, choose Sandbox to practise with test accounts, or Live for real payments.

Sandbox and Live have separate apps and separate keys. Start with Sandbox.

  3. Under REST API apps, open your app, or press Create App and give it a name.

PayPal also provides a Default Application, and that works too.

  4. On the app's page, press Add Webhook in the webhooks section.

  5. Paste the address from Mankai into Webhook URL. Tick Payment capture completed and Payment capture refunded, then save.

Copy your keys into Mankai

Now switch between the two tabs: copy in PayPal, paste in Mankai.

  1. On the app's page in PayPal, copy the Client ID. Paste it into Client ID in Mankai.

  2. In PayPal, reveal the app's secret and copy it. Paste it into Secret in Mankai.

  3. Under Mode, choose Sandbox or Live to match the PayPal page you copied from.

Sandbox keys only work in Sandbox, and live keys only work in Live.

  4. In PayPal, copy the Webhook ID shown beside your webhook. Paste it into Webhook ID in Mankai, then press Save.

  5. Press Test connection. A message that starts with Authenticated means PayPal accepted your keys.

  6. Close the panel. Make sure the PayPal card says In use, then press Save settings at the top right.

You're done when

The PayPal card says Connected and In use. Once you have an invoice, you can try it in Sandbox with a PayPal sandbox test account. Then see How you know a payment arrived.

If something's not right

Test connection does not say Connected

Make sure Mode matches your keys, since test keys fail in Live and live keys fail in Test. Paste the keys again, press Save, and press Test connection once more.

A yellow note says No signing secret yet

That note is on the Stripe panel. Until you add the Signing secret, a card payment reaches Mankai only on a check that runs every three hours. Finish the webhook steps and Mankai hears about payments straight away.

How do I switch from practice to real payments?

Choose Live under Mode, paste your live keys, and add a live webhook. Stripe and PayPal each keep test and live webhooks apart, so paste the new signing secret or webhook ID too, then press Save.
