Chapter 15 · Keep it running
What to ask your host for
Mankai runs on your own web hosting, so a few things depend on your host: the PHP version, backups, email and scheduled jobs.
This lesson says what to ask for and where in Mankai you can see each answer. Hosts on the recommendations page keep these up to date.
PHP version
Mankai needs PHP 8.1 or newer, and 8.2 or 8.3 is best. PHP version, in the Environment card on Diagnostics, shows what your host runs. If it is older, ask your host to switch your site to PHP 8.2 or 8.3.
Backups
Ask for daily backups of your whole site, kept for at least two weeks, and ask how to restore one. Take an extra backup before you update Mankai or WordPress.
Your clients, sessions and invoices live in your site's database. Your gallery photos live in a private folder called mankai-private, usually next to your website folder and not inside it. Some backup tools copy only the website folder, so ask your host to confirm that their backup includes this private folder. Private media vault on Diagnostics shows where it is.
Mankai sends its emails through your mail plugin, FluentSMTP, connected to your own email account, as in Install FluentSMTP and connect your email. Ask your host about email only if the connection fails, or if they block outgoing email.
Email on Diagnostics says sent by FluentSMTP when this is set up.
Scheduled jobs
Reminders and automatic emails run on a schedule. By default, WordPress runs its schedule only when someone visits your site, so a quiet site can send reminders late. Ask your host to run a real scheduled job, which hosts call a cron job.
WP-Cron configuration on Diagnostics shows the exact line to give them.
A message you can send your host
Copy this into an email or chat with your host.
- Please run my site on PHP 8.2 or newer.
- Please take daily backups, keep them for 14 days, and include the
mankai-privatefolder next to my website folder. - Please add a cron job that opens
wp-cron.phpon my site every minute. - Please make sure my site is allowed to send email.
You're done when
You know what to ask your host for, and where in Mankai to check each answer. Next, see what happens if Pro runs out or you uninstall.
If something's not right
I do not know who my host is
Look for the company on your hosting invoice. If you only know your website address, ask whoever built the site, or search the address on a "who hosts this website" tool.
My host says they cannot change the PHP version
Most hosts let you change it in their control panel, under a heading such as PHP version or PHP settings. If yours does not, a host on the recommendations page will.
